Today I have made Vazhaipoo Vadai or Aratipoovu Vada Or Banana Flower Vada. I grew up with my grandparents, who had lots of banana plants. My grandmother used to cook many different banana recipes using banana stems, banana flower and of course raw banana.

She used to make banana flower stir fry, banana flower vada, banana plant stems (inside part ) stir fry , plantain fritters or plantain bajji, plantain stir fry, plantain kurma, plantain dry masala similar to aloo curry we make for poori’s.

We had purchased banana flower recently from a new Indian store located relatively closer to my house. I kept postponing to cook using banana flower because of cleaning process involved 😉 Finally I have to cook one day or else it will be spoiled. Luckily I was on phone talking to my Mom, she said why don’t you prepare Arati puvvu Vada or Vazhaipoo Vadai.

Ingredients for making Banana Flower Vada or Arati Puvvu Vada or Vazhaipoo Vadai

1) Banana Flower 3/4 cup ( you can increase or decrease)
2) Chana Daal 1 cup
3) Green Chillies 3-4 ( I used Red chillies)
4) Ginger 1′ piece
5) Garlic 2 pods
6) Cinnamon 1 stick
7) Cloves 3 or 4
8) Curry leaves
9) Cilantro or Coriander leaves
10) Salt
11) Oil
12)Sompu/Sounf/Fennel Seeds 1 tsp

 

Making of Banana Flower Vada or Arati Puvvu Vada or Vazhaipoo Vadai

I soaked some chana daal. Soak for at least 30 min.

Start cleaning banana flower to remove pollens and stiff cover like thing which is tough to cook. Check this youtube video for cleaning banana flower.

Once banana flower cleaning is done.Soak them in water to avoid oxidation.

Vazhaipoo Vadai or Banana Flower Vada or Arati Puvvu Vada is made using banana flower.Wonderful way to taste banana flower or Vazhaipoo or Arati Puvvu.This is my grandma's recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 Banana Flower
  • 1 Cup Chana Daal
  • 4 Green /Red Chillies
  • 1 Inch Ginger
  • 2 Pods Garlic
  • 1 stick Cinnamon
  • 4 Cloves
  • 1 tbsp Fennel Seeds
  • 10 Curry leaves
  • 1 Bunch Cilantro
  • 1 Bunch Mint leaves
  • Salt
  • Oil

Instructions

  1. Soak chana daal for at least 30 min.

  3. Once banana flower cleaning is done.Soak them in water to avoid oxidation.

  4. Now grind chana daal,green chillies,ginger,garlic,cinnamon,fennnel seeds,cloves into coarse paste.

  5. Add banana flowers into blender and grind them into coarse or soft paste. It depends on how you like your vada texture.

  6. Now take banana flower mixture into a bowl and add onions.

  7. Add curry leaves,coriander leaves,mint leaves and mix.

  8. Now shape them into vada and deep fry them

  9. Vazhaipoo Vadai will float in oil when it is completely cooked. Turn them now and then to cook evenly.

  10. Once they are cooked remove them into paper towel, excess oil will be absorbed by paper.

  11. Banana flower vada is done. Serve them hot.
