Kerala Kappa ( Mashed Tapioca)

This post is about Kerala kappa recipe. It is mashed tapioca. I have learned this from my MIL. Traditionally it is eaten with fish curry . But in my home we eat with any non veg curry(chicken curry,mutton curry or fish curry) . My family treats this as mashed potatoes with gravy 😉

Ingredients for Kerala kappa

Tapioca
Small onions( pearl onions) 5-6
Green chillies 4-5
Grated Coconut 1/2 cup
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Ginger 1/2 inch piece
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Salt
Curry leaves
Mustard Seeds 1/2 tsp

Making of Kerala Kappa

First remove the skin and chop tapioca into cube pieces.

Boil water in a pan and add salt to it. Add cleaned tapioca into the boiling water and let it boil it is tender and cooked.

Drain excess water and mash tapioca . Don’t make a fine paste. Consistency should be like mashed potatoes for Poori. It depends on how you like it.

Grind coconut, onions, green chillies,cumin seeds and ginger into coarse paste and mix it with mashed tapioca or kappa.

Now heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and curry leaves. When mustard seeds crackle add the hot oil to mashed kappa.

Mix it well and Kerala Kappa is done. You can serve this with fish curry or Chicken curry or Mutton curry or Prawn Curry as well.
