Mutton Paya Recipe and Health Benefits of Mutton Soup

This is  my tweaked Mutton paya recipe. You can add an ingredient or replace an ingredient to suite your taste.Paya and I have a long relationship. Eating mutton every week is norm in my home..I have eaten goat paya throughout my life ,but I have cooked more paya after my elder one is born. My Mom and friends told me that mutton paya will help recovery process after delivery. Paya helps in breast milk production.

I don’t know if this is true but my kid used to sleep longer than normal days . Guess after eating mutton paya, milk produced with be rich in protein and this helps babies to sleep better and mom can rest for a while . After my elder one turned one year old,I stopped eating mutton . I blame Indian store near my home. Mutton sold in the shops during that time was not good. This made me to stop eating  mutton while I continue to cook mutton for my family.

I have cooked mutton paya in slow cooker many times. This time I have mutton soup using pressure cooker.Use whatever works for you. If you are making this when you are feeding your baby adjust spice levels. If Mother eats spicy food,breats milk will be spicy and your baby will become more gassy.You don’t want that.

This mutton paya soup or mutton bone broth can be served with Idli or Idliyappam or with naan or roti.My Mom used to serve with Idli or Idliyappam ,because both of them are easy to digest for new Mom. If you want thicker mutton bone soup then you can adjust using besan,flour or thick coconut milk.

Ingredients for Mutton Paya Recipe

Mutton Leg Pieces or Lamb Trotters 1 Lb

Onions 1 No

Curry Leaves

Cardamom 4

Cloves 4

Cinnamon Sticks 2

Bay Leaves 2

Tomato 1

Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp

Coconut Milk

Besan or Chick Pea Flour 1 Tbsp (optional)

Cilantro/Coriander leaves

Pepper Powder

For making paste:

Green Chillies 3-5

Coriander Seeds 1 Tbsp

Onion 1 small

Ginger 1 inch piece

Making of Mutton Paya Recipe

First clean lamb legs or lamb trotters. They will have hair in few places watch out for them.

Pressure cook mutton leg pieces for upto 10 whistles with enough water and salt to cook on medium flame.

Note: You can use slow cooker for cooking mutton leg pieces. Cook them on low oevrnight or for 8 hours and you can make it in the morning.I had made this Mutton paya recipe in slow cooker many times.

While mutton trotters are cooking prepare for soup.Take a pan and add a tbsp of oil. When oil is hot add chopped onions and green chillies,ginger and corriander seeds and saute for few minutes.
Let it cool and make a paste of it.

In another pan add oil when it is hot and add curry leaves.Allow them to sizzle and add cardamom,cloves,cinnamon,bay leaves and saute till you smell the aroma of spices.

Add chopped onions and let it sweat for couple of minutes.Now add grinded onion paste to the pan and mix it good.

Now add chopped tomatoes and cook it till it is mushy. Add turmeric powder and saute.

Now add cooked mutton leg pieces along with water to the pan and let it cook till you can see bubbles on top.

At this point taste mutton paya or mutton soup and adjust spice and salt levels. If mutton soup is too watery you can thickening agents like besan or chick pea flour or all purpose flour mixedd with tbsp of water and then add it to paya.I have added thick coconut milk.

Garnish with cilantro or coriander leaves and sprinkle pepper powder on top of mutton soup while serving.You can skip pepper powder if you don’t like.

Mutton paya or mutton soup or mutton bone broth is ready.

Serve them with Idli,Idliyappam,roti or naan or you can drink it as in a bowl.
