Spicy Chicken Curry(Varutha Kozhi Curry)

I love spicy food. Once I visited a person who saw me and said my husband likes spicy food. You need to be a astrologer or someone else, if you know my language and my place you can simply say that. I know many of you will agree with me that many Andhra people love spicy food 🙂

This Spicy Chicken Curry or Varutha Kozhi Curry recipe is by my favorite Chef Damodharam. This is spicy and tastes yummy.Do try it and let me know and fall in love with spicy food don’t be shy. This kozhi(chicken) curry is spicy.Adjust spice levels according to your taste buds.

 

Ingredients for Spicy Chicken Curry(Varutha Kozhi Curry):

Chicken 1 lb

Onions 2 medium

Tomato 1

Ginger Garlic Paste 1.5 Tbsp

Turmeric Powder 1 Tsp

Salt

Chilly Powder 1/2 Tsp

Coriander Powder 1Tsp

Curry Leaves

Coriander(Cilantro) leaves

Mint Leaves

For Masala:

Coriander Seeds 4 Tbsp

Chana Dal 4 Tbsp

Red Chillies 8

Black Pepper corns 4 Tsp

Cumin 1 Tsp

Fennel Seeds 1 Tbsp

Cinnamon Sticks 1-2

Cardamom 4

Cloves 4-5

Curry leaves few

(All spices can be adjusted according to your taste)

For Marination :

Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp

Chilly Powder 1 tsp

Coriander powder 1 tsp

Ginger Garlic Paste 1 tsp

Lemon Juice from 1 lemon

Salt

Making of Spicy Chicken Curry(Varutha Kozhi Curry):

Marinate chicken pieces in salt,ginger garlic paste,chilly powder,turmeric powder,lemon juice,coriander powder.

Dry roast all the ingredients mentioned under masala including curry leaves. Powder them and keep it aside.

I forgot to roast curry leaves but I have added them when blending masala.

Now take a pan and add oil when pan is hot.

Add curry leaves when oil is hot.

Now add chopped onions and saute till they are transparent.

Add ginger garlic paste and fry till raw smell is gone.

Now add chicken pieces to the pan and fry them on medium to high heat for few minutes.

Add chopped tomatoes and saute till they are soft and mushy.(I forgot to take pic of this step)

Now add turmeric powder,chilly powder,coriander powder and masala powder which we made initially. Saute on low flame till raw smell is gone. Keep stirring or you will end up with burnt masala which doesn’t taste good.

Now add lightly beaten curd (yogurt) to the pan and stir.

At this point everything will be almost dry ,now add either water or broth into the pan and allow  kozhi curry or chicken curry to cook on medium flame.It might take 15-30 min.

Note: If you want dry chicken curry add little water or broth.I have added more broth because I want more gravy.

Keep checking once in a while and stir the curry.When chicken is cooked completely switch of the flame and garnish with coriander(cilantro) or mint leaves.
