Whole Urad Dal Idli -Whole Black Gram Idli

First of all have you been in a situation where you are left with whole urad dal because of some pooja? I have been there many times.After doing pooja, I used to store them in shelf forever.When ever I look them I used to think what to do with whole urad dal or nalla uddulu or minumulu as we call in Telugu.Finally one day while I was talking with my Mom I remembered them and asked her advice. She told my Grand ma used to make Idli with whole urad dal. Therefore I have tried this Whole Urad Dal Idli or Whole Black Gram Idli.Whole urad dal is more nutritious than regular urad dal.

Ingredients for Whole Urad Dal Idli/Whole Black Gram Idli:

Whole Urad Dal or Whole Black Gram 1 cup

Rice 2 cups

Fenugreek or Methi seeds 1 tbsp

Salt

Making of Whole Urad Dal Idli/Whole Black Gram Idli:

First of all soak whole black gram or whole urad dal and rice for 4-8 hours along with fenu greek seeds.Either soak rice and whole urad dal separately or soak them together. I soak them together so I can save some cleaning time later.

Black gram magically appears like green gram and look at gorgeous yellow urad dal. The white urad dal,which we normally get might be after removing this yellow tint. Losing many nutrients right here …

Next after rice and whole urad dal was soaked for few hours you can remove the skin from whole urad dal.While I have not removed any skin, but my Mom likes to clean the skin from whole urad dal  as much as possible when cleaning. FYI.

Grind them into fine paste. Let the batter ferment overnight or about 8-10 hours.

If you live in cold places, you might have trouble fermenting idli batter. If you have any warn sport in the home,choose that spot. Or if you have oven ,preheat the oven at 200 F and switch off the oven and keep the batter in the warm oven. This will help raise the batter.

Finally when the batter is raised and fermented ,pour whole urad dal idli batter in idli molds and steam them for 15-30 minutes.

Serve whole urad dal idli or whole black gram idli with your favorite chutney.

I have served mine with peanut chutney as usual 😉 Yummo !!!

Most of all my family didn’t even notice any change in idli taste and there were  no complaints. Good sign 🙂

    Nice, I have been wondering why no one uses black urad dal to make idlis…but why did you not go all the way and use brown rice instead of white ??

  • Raj, I didn’t had brown rice at home on that day 🙂
